On December 26, 1908, Canadian Tommy Burns defended his Heavyweight World Title against Jack Johnson in Sydney, Australia. Johnson earned his shot at the Championship after stalking Burns around the world for two years and taunting him in the press. It is believed that Burns had only agreed to fight Johnson after promoters guaranteed him $30,000. The fight lasted fourteen one-sided rounds before being stopped by the police in front of over 20,000 spectators at the Sydney Stadium. The title was awarded to Johnson on a referee's decision as a knockout. Johnson was the first black boxer in history to become heavyweight world champion. Incidentally Joe Gans was the first black champion at lightweight eight years earlier.

Offered here is a rare, original on-site program from Sydney. Features a beautiful front cover with images of both contestants. More than 70 pages in total. As expected there's some foxing, most notably to the covers. 1/2" tear to front and back covers running perpendicular to the spine. The spine and binding are very good for the age of the program. Corner crease to the bottom of the back cover. The interior pages are mostly clean and remain in excellent shape. A nice example of a very rare program - an essential addition to any advanced boxing collection.
