Muhammad Ali met Earnie Shavers on September 29th 1977; presented here is an on-site poster from Madison Square Garden, signed in black felt tip pen by both fighters, "Muhammad Ali" and "To my friend Eric - Earnie Shavers - Peace". The card poster measures 29 x 23" and is in good condition; horizontal centre crease, edge and corner wear and fading of the yellow background. Three small tears to the left side of the poster.
Shaver's payday was the biggest of his career [$300,000] but still ten times less than what the Champion earned. In a tough fight, Ali emerged victorious with a unanimous decision. He was hurt in the second round, but avoided Shavers going for the kill by pretending to be more concussed than he was. The challenger thought Ali was kidding around and never applied the pressure than might have earned him the stoppage and the Heavyweight Title.
