Archie Moore's personally owned & fight worn black and gold boxing robe. The robe has been prominently signed on the left cuff in black felt tip, "Archie Moore." It features a black floral-patterned exterior with gold piping, and cream-and-gold embroidered trim and lining. The robe is complete with its matching sash. In fine condition, with a somewhat musty odor. The elaborate robe is superb piece of boxing history originating from arguably the greatest Light Heavyweight in history.
Accompanied by a handwritten provenance statement from Moore, dated September 3, 1992, in full: "I used this robe in several championship matches including Tony Anthony, Yolande Pompey, etc., Archie Moore." The robe was originally purchased from Archie Moore - along with the gloves and shorts we previously sold - by Marty Jacobs of the Sands Hotel Boxing Museum in Las Vegas. They were then purchased from Jacobs by Bob Case - former President of the International Boxing Association - in 1985. Also included is a copy of a handwritten letter of provenance from Bob Case concerning the history of Moore's fight-used memorabilia. The statement recounts a meeting with Moore, in which he said that he used the robe for many years, and that it was made for him by the mother of his ex-wife. The items were later acquired by renowned collector David Gainsborough Roberts and sold via his "Out of the Ordinary" auction at Christie's in September 2016.
Due to lack of fight footage, we've been unable to confirm the exact fights Archie wore this robe in. He did not appear to wear the robe in the Yolande Pompey fight as the available film from that contest shows him wearing a similar, albeit different robe. It is not surprising that Moore would have difficulty remembering the specific fight(s) he wore the robe in some 30+ years later.
