Muhammad Ali, Floyd Patterson, Roberto Duran & Carlos Ortiz signed mini-poster
A reproduction card-stock poster advertising the Muhammad Ali v Floyd Patterson II & Roberto Duran v Carlos Ortiz double header at Madison Square Garden on September 20, 1972. The poster has been signed by all four fighters in sharpie pen. Ali and Duran signed in black whilst Patterson and Ortiz penned their autographs in dark green. Ali defeated Patterson by TKO in round 7. The Duran vs. Ortiz fight never took place with a young Duran withdrawing citing Bronchitis and returning to Panama. This was the fight the world wanted to see and the debate still continues on who would have won. Ortiz had come out of retirement earlier in the year for this World Title fight after Duran has previously beaten Britain’s Ken Buchanan in controversial circumstances. Duran’s trainer later admitted that he was not sick and that they'd pulled him out of the fight fearing he'd be outclassed by Ortiz. Duran was ultimately replaced by Buchanan, who stopped Ortiz in the sixth round. The poster was signed by the four boxers in the early 1990's - it measures 8.5 by 11 inches and retains near mint status.
