Scarce on-site poster from the Nipon Budokan Arena in Tokyo where Muhammad Ali fought Japanese professional wrestler Antonio Inoki. The mixed martial arts contest was undoubtedly the most bizarre bout of Muhammad Ali's entire boxing career. It pitted the heavyweight champion of the world against a Japanese wrestling champion. What was supposed to be a staged exhibition somehow morphed into a real fight. Ali sustained such serious leg injuries from Inoki's kicks that amputation of his leg was considered. After that, Ali's footwork was never the same again. Even stranger, Ali and Inoki somehow became lifelong friends and Inoki converted to Islam. This attractive on-site poster is the largest version of those made for the event. It measures 21" x 29" and has been preserved the last forty years in near mint condition.
