BoxArt are delighted to offer this extremely rare on-site program from London, May 1909. The program covers 4 consecutive nights of boxing held from May 25 to May 28 at the Arena, Villiers Street in Charing Cross, London. On May 27th Joe Jeannette fought two six round contests against Harry Shearing and Trooper Cooke, winning both by TKO. Amazingly he was scheduled to fight a third bout against Fred Drummond but - perhaps wisely - his opponent didn't show up on the night. At the same venue on Tuesday 25th May a Benefit Performance was held for boxing legend Jem Mace who had fallen on hard times. During his life Mace had made and gambled away a considerable fortune and was now living in poverty. The highlight of the benefit was an exhibition bout between Jeannette and former Heavyweight Champion Bob Fitzsimmons (see final photo for an image of their exhibition - photo not included in the sale). Charlie Mitchell, Johnny Summers, Jimmy Britt & Jim Driscoll were amongst the other notable names performing. On the 26th May American Willie Lewis - considered a pioneer of the one two punch - knocked out English Champion Andrew Jephtha in what was billed as a fight for the Welterweight Championship of the World. There was also further international boxing on Friday 28th May.
The twelve page program measures 5 x 8". Pages three to five feature a biography of Jem Mace's life and an appeal for donations for his benefit. The front cover features a great image of Mace with arms folded. The remaining pages outline the schedule over the four nights of boxing. The program is in excellent vintage condition. Unfolded with solid binding. Slight rusting to the central staple and minor wrinkling to the pages. We have never seen another of these. Undoubtedly a very rare program from the career of boxing great Joe Jeannette.
