A rare on-site poster from Sugar Ray Robinson's middleweight bout against British Champion, Terry Downes. The fight took place at Empire Pool on September 25, 1962 and and was billed as the battle of the former Middleweight Champions. Downes secured one of the most impressive scalps of his career, defeating the 41 year old Robinson on points over 10 rounds. When asked after the fight how it felt to beat a boxer of such esteem, Downes famously replied, "I didn't beat Sugar Ray, I beat his ghost."
This is a seldom seen portrait version of the on-site poster. An arresting poster, typical of the British style in the 1960's: vivid colour and great imagery of the combatants. In VG condition with corner creases, edge wear and horizontal centre fold. There are tape marks to the edges from original display. Age toning and soiling to the reverse. 22 x 14". The poster is double matted to a total size of 26 x 17" and ready to frame. A small piece of double sided tape has been used in each corner to hold the poster in place - it can be fairly easily removed from the matting if desired.
