Offered here is an exceptionally rare original '8 Stone Champion Belt' awarded to esteemed 19th Century British boxer Edwin 'Nunc' Wallace. The English title belt is circa 1887-1892. Wallace fought for the English 8 stone title (112 lbs) on several occasions during this period: He defeated Sam Tongue in May 1887 to claim the title, KO'd 'Little' Bill Goode in a 1889 rematch & stopped Joe Portley in the 24th round of their 1892 fight. Wallace also won the English 114 lbs on numerous occasions. His most notorious contest was against the famous American George Dixon in 1890 for the Featherweight Championship of the World. Although Wallace eventually lost the fight, he battled for 18 tough rounds before surrendering.
The belt consists of three plate form with red velvet lining. We believe it's made from brass. The central plate is engraved '8 Stone Champion Belt won by Nunc Wallace'. Adorned to either side by embossed images of boxers. The condition is fair as can be expected for a 125 year old belt. The red velvet lining is coming away from the belt in several places and needs to be reattached. The belt has developed a patina over the years - this could be cleaned but we personally feel it adds to the belts vintage charm. The three plates are attached by a softer material that sits under the velvet (see final two photos). This has been weathered over the years and has some splitting at the end. Although the belt is fully intact it would benefit from some professional restoration.
