1979 Gerrie Coetzee v John Tate original medal
On 20th October 1979 home favorite Gerrie Coetzee met 'Big' John Tate in Pretoria, South Africa for the vacant WBA heavyweight title. Tate won a close unanimous decision in front of 86,000 spectators at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Presented here is a scarce original commemorative medal from South Africa. In features Coetzee on one side with details of the fight in Afrikaans, and Tate on the other with the information in English. The fight was significant not only as a world title contest, but as a watershed moment in South African race relations during the apartheid era. The medallion is in VG condition. The silver plating has been lost in a couple of places, mainly around the hole. There is also tiny areas of loss to Tate's nose and cap. Small ding at 9 o'clock on Tate's side. Measures approximately 1 1/2" in diameter.
