Exceptionally rare on-site ticket stub from the August 24, 1908 Heavyweight Title fight at Sydney Stadium, Rushcutters' Bay. It was the third and final time Tommy Burns fought Australian challenger Bill Squires. Burns emerged victorious on all three occasions, this time by 13th round KO. Measuring 1 5/8" by 2" the yellow ticket includes the names of the protagonists, the venue, the ticket number and the price - a modest £1 by today's standards! The original embossed stamp can be seen on the ticket. In excellent, clean condition. An extremely rare ticket, the only one we have seen.
Tommy Burns is the only Canadian-born World heavyweight Champion in history. He was the first to travel the globe in defending his title, making 11 defenses despite often being the underdog due to his inferior size. Burns famously challenged all comers as Champion, leading to his celebrated contest and ultimate defeat against Jack Johnson.
