A very rare and original, 1846 Large Folio, Hand Colored Aquatint Engraving depicting the legendary Heavyweight Boxing Champion William "Bendigo" Thompson. The engraving measures approx. 22 1/2” by 29” in total size, although it has a matting added to it from previous framing that covers much of the margin. The area of the engraving currently visible is 16" x 21 1/2". The matting is only attached along the top edge and could be removed if desired. The engraving itself is in excellent condition for it's age. There is one small ripple and a couple of minor spots of age toning, otherwise fine. The colors and bold. Tough to find a better example of such an old piece.
Bio: William "Bendigo" Thompson started prizefighting at 18, and by 21 had become a professional boxer. In the course of his pugilistic career (1832–50), Bendigo lost only one fight, a defeat to Benjamin Canut in 1838. Caunt, however, outweighed him by more than 40 pounds, and the fight was lost when Bendigo was judged to have committed a foul. In 1839 Bendigo won the English championship by beating James "Deaf" Burke. He retired briefly but then returned to win the disputed title of champion of England from Caunt in 1845. Bendigo was inducted into Ring magazine’s Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955.
