1888 Charley Mitchell silk Stevengraph
A scarce antique Stevengraph of English boxing champion Charley Mitchell. Mitchell met John L Sullivan twice, including a bloody two hour battle in Chantilly, France 1888. He also fought for the world heavyweight championship in 1894, losing by third round KO to James J Corbett. Stevengraphs are nineteenth century images woven in pure silk and were produced by Thomas Stevens of Coventry, England. This particular series was produced in 1888. Measures 7" x 8" including the double frame it's housed within. Mitchell's biography can be seen on the back. The frames are in fair condition with chipping and paint loss. The Stevengraph is in fine shape - the border is clean with light foxing and the silk remains EX-NM.
