An original colored engraving of former Champion of England Jem Mace. Despite being a middleweight, Mace succeeded in outboxing heavier opponents thanks to his dancing style, clever defensive tactics and powerful, accurate punching. When boxing was outlawed in the Britain he relocated to the USA where prizefighting was still flourishing. He toured with the celebrated American boxer John C Heenan. giving exhibitions of glove boxing. Mace was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
The engraving was published by George Newbold of London in 1860. Measuring 6.5 x 10.25" mounted onto a backing. Total size including frame is 10.5 x 14.5". The condition is good. 1" tear to the left edge. Small chips missing from the border area, not affecting the image of Mace. Scattered soiling.
