Rare one page letter, signed at the conclusion, "Yours very truly, John Donaldson". The body of the letter was penned in another hand on Donaldson's behalf. Donaldson writes to Jas Cunliff - the inventor of a punch bag that he'd just trialled at the Rochester Athletic Club - and gives his favourable verdict. He declares that the bag "is the best thing of its kind on the market" and "every gymnasium should discard the old style drum and provide one of your invention". Donaldson was travelling with James J. Corbett in the play 'Gentleman Jack' at the time the letter was written. VG condition.
John Donaldson was an Irish-American Heavyweight who defeated such men as Bryan Campbell, Jack Keefe, James Dalton and Al Marx during his career. He was a frequent sparring partner for Jim Corbett and is best known for his two contests against John L. Sullivan.
