A superb late nineteenth century bronze sculpture of John L. Sullivan by German artist Arthur Waagen. It features the characteristic figure of the ‘Boston Strong Boy’ John Lawrence Sullivan in fighting pose. The sides of the rectangular plinth are adorned with reliefs of mythological fighting scenes. The work bears the incised artist's signature ‘Waagen’ on the plinth. In very good condition for it's age. Slight cracking around the heel of Sullivan's left shoe. The piece measures an impressive 25.5" in height. The base is 7" x 12".
The origin of this figure is to be seen in context with the famous boxing match between Sullivan and James ‘Gentleman Jim’ Corbett, in which Corbett defeated Sullivan in the 21st round at the Olympic Club in New Orleans on September 7, 1892, becoming the World Heavyweight Champion. Waagen also made a Corbett sculpture during the same period.
The sculptor Arthur Waagen (1869-1910) spent most of his life in Paris and exhibited in the Salons of 1861 and 1887. He was known primarily for his animal sculptures. His most famous work is the large hunting group ‘Kabyle au Retour de la Chasse’, depicting a North African hunter with his horse, dogs and prey.
