An interesting two sided letter (one page) penned by Tommy Burns to an acquaintance in May 1954. Burns says he received the gentleman's letter and offers advice on how to achieve a healthy and happy outlook on life. The letter demonstrates the extent of Burns' religious belief in his later life with frequent references to Jesus and God. There's also a great paragraph where he mentions "many years after I was deprived of the World Heavyweight Championship by the great Jack Johnson in Sydney Australia Dec 26/1908, I was wrecked with arthritis. The doctors did everything they could to get me well but finally sent me home to die". Burns attests his remarkable recovery to a decision to change his mind to a positive one and the practice of frequent "meditation in the silence as Jesus did for hours and days". Signed by Burns at the conclusion of the letter. The condition is very good with fold lines and two holes punched. A few minor edge tears and a couple of spots of soiling.
Burns is the only Canadian-born World heavyweight Champion in history. He was the first to travel the globe in defending his title, making 11 defenses despite often being the underdog due to his inferior size. Burns famously challenged all comers as Champion, leading to his celebrated contest and ultimate defeat against Jack Johnson.
