An antique colored engraving of former British bare-knuckle boxer Bob Brettle. Brettle was active in Birmingham in the 1950's, earning him the nickname 'The Birmingham Pet'. He had a successful career, with his most significant contest coming against Tom Sayers in 1859. Unfortunately Brettle had to retire from the fight with a dislocated shoulder.
The engraving was published by George Newbold of London circa 1860. Measuring 6.5 x 10.25" mounted onto a backing. Total size including frame is 10.5 x 14.5". The condition is very good. Mild foxing and one tiny hole under Brettle's right foot.
